Beantown, Hub of the Solar System, Cradle of Liberty,
Athens of America, City Upon a Hill - Boston, by any name, is all
of these and more.
Boston
is a bustling city with strong ties to its past. When the Puritans
first settled here in 1630, the area was a marshy peninsula called
Shawmut. Native Americans visited to hunt and fist; the only
year-round inhabitant was a hermit, Rev. William Blaxton. In building
their colony, the Puritans laid the foundation of present-day Boston.
They established schools, lowered hills, and filled in marshes. An
aura of independence prevailed. Today, old and new meld together along
Boston's notoriously crooked streets. From the faint scent of molasses
in the North End to the graceful swam boats gliding in the Public
Garden, from hoof prints embedded in a Cambridge sidewalk to headstones
that don't always match the bones beneath them, Boston promises a
story around every corner.
